RF Connectors And Their Application in the Airline Industry

Various types of connectors are required for the complex electrical systems of aircraft, such as RF (Radio Frequency) connectors, among others. Designed primarily for accommodating cables, RF connectors are electrical connectors that serve to carry radio frequencies, and they are commonly used in the telecommunications industry,  aerospace communications, and more. In this blog, we will provide a brief overview of RF connectors and their common applications, allowing you to have a better understanding of such parts.

There are various types of RF connectors on the market, especially for mitigating signal reflection. However, RF connectors primarily function as electrical connectors for cables that carry radio frequencies. To suit various types of assemblies, some connectors do not require anything other than twisting the component to apply them on a part. Additionally, a few types of radio frequency connectors can also be twisted toward the end of a coaxial cable, while others have a bayonet or brace-like mechanism for fastening.

In aircraft, RF connectors are primarily paired with antenna wiring for antennas, serving as the receiver of transmitted radio frequency data. Antennas utilizing such connections are also capable of receiving radio waves traveling through the atmosphere for interpretation by an onboard aircraft device. To assist in-flight operations and the transfer of data, airplanes have 3 types of antennas which are loop, dipole, and Marconi variations. Loop antennas are radio antennas featuring a coil or loop of wire, tubing, or other similar component that is typically fed by a balanced source or is fed on a balanced load. On the other hand, in the telecommunication industry, a dipole or doublet antenna is an RF antenna with two conductive elements like wires or rods. As the last common antenna, Marconi antennas require a conducting path to the ground and are primarily used for frequencies less than 2 MHz.

As mentioned above, wires used in antennas necessitate the use of RF connectors as antennas are commonly connected to various devices with coaxial cables, those of which may also connect the aircraft's radio system to its antenna. Airplanes can also use RF connectors for various other types of cables; however, in the airline industry, RF connectors are mostly used for antenna wiring. For such antennas, coaxial cables and RF connectors are a commonly adopted wiring solution. The most advantageous aspect of RF connectors is that they enable two-way radios to function well in airplanes. Two-way radios are used by pilots to communicate with air traffic controllers (ATC), and they are often essential for upholding safety and compliance.
