Engine exhaust systems are used for two critical functions on aircraft. The first is to carry the exhaust heat and gases produced by the engine’s combustion away from the cabin, while the second is to muffle the sound of the engine for the sake of preventing noise pollution.

According to the FAA regulation FAR 23.1123, an exhaust system must follow three basic requirements:

1. Each exhaust system must be fireproof and corrosion-resistant and must have means to prevent failure due to expansion by operating temperatures.
2. Each exhaust system must be supported to withstand the vibration and inertial loads to which it may be subjected to in operation.
3. Parts of the system connected to components between which relative motion could exist must have means for flexibility.

Exhaust systems are made from either stainless steel or plain mild steel pipes. Mild steel corrodes and is not as light as stainless steel, but it is cheaper and easier to weld.

Components

Manifold- the piping attached to the engine’s cylinders. These pipes capture exhaust gas as it is pushed out of the cylinders through the exhaust valves and guide the gases through the exhaust pipe system to the atmosphere.

Muffler- A system of pipes at the end of the exhaust system that captures exhaust and reduces noise generated by the aircraft’s engine.

Heat Ducting- as exhaust flows through the muffler, the muffler is heated, and in turn heats the air around the muffler. This air is captured by a separate system of piping and routed to the cabin and windshield for heating and defrosting purposes. 

EGT Probe- Some exhaust systems have an exhaust temperature (EGT) probe installed. The EGT probe measures the temperature of gases at the exhaust manifold and is used to regulate the fuel-air mixture inside the cylinder.
